When the Cal State San Marcos campus was in its infancy in 1989, Clarke Field House – home of the athletic department – had just one basketball half court. Twenty five years later that hadn’t changed. Baseball, softball, soccer and track facilities have sprung up, but basketball, volleyball and intramurals are all held off campus. With admittance to the NCAA Division II, things will change at CSUSM. Thursday, at a celebration of moving from the NAIA to the NCAA Division II and the CCAA, plans for a new gym were revealed. Dubbed “The Field House Expansion Project” the Cougars hope to have their men’s and women’s basketball teams as well as women’s volleyball playing in a new gym in time for 2016-2017 season.
